Impacts of a potential government shutdown
We are writing regarding the possibility that the U.S. federal government will shut down on Saturday, November 18, pausing several government functions that affect university education, research, and other operations. This disruption will occur if the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate are unable to agree on a continuing resolution to authorize federal funding in the absence of appropriations for the current federal fiscal year. Both Cornell and the federal agencies have contingency plans in place in case this occurs for short durations. Cornell is well prepared for that possibility across all of our campuses.
You will receive additional communication sharing Cornell’s preparedness plans and resources, as relevant to you. For example, if you are part of the broad Cornell research community that is sponsored by or works with federal government agencies, more specific communications will follow today.
For our students, if you receive federal financial aid or VA benefits, no immediate impact is anticipated this semester. And if you are a Cornell employee or student seeking a visa renewal during a shutdown period, related federal processes are expected to be paused. In all of the varied circumstances that can impact Cornell life and our broader activities, we will work together to anticipate and reduce disruptions as much as possible.
From past experience, we know that federal government shutdowns can be stressful to our studies, research, work, and travel plans. Many Cornell teams are prepared to work with you as questions and concerns arise, and we remind you of the many wellbeing resources (for employees and for students) available to Cornellians.
