Preparing for a potential government shutdown
Dear Cornellians,
Cornell is closely monitoring discussions in Washington, D.C., about the potential for a federal government shutdown at midnight tonight. A disruption in government functions could affect university education, research, and other operations. Please know that Cornell and federal agencies have contingency plans in place. Across all campuses, we are well prepared for the impact of a short-term shutdown.
As relevant to you, Cornell will send additional communications about the university’s preparedness plans and resources. For example, if you are part of the broad Cornell research community that is sponsored by, or works with, federal government agencies, more specific communications will follow today.
In the event of a government shutdown, students who receive federal financial aid or Veterans Affairs benefits should not face any immediate impact. We do not anticipate delays for employees or students seeking visa renewals.
Please be assured that Cornell staff and faculty are working closely to anticipate every scenario and to reduce disruption to your work, research, studies, and travel plans. The university will continue to monitor the situation and will share updates to the community as warranted.
From past experience, we know that shutdowns of the federal government can be stressful. Cornell has many well-being resources available for faculty and staff and for students.
Sincerely,
Krystyn J. Van Vliet
