Presidential Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault
Dear Cornell community,
We write to share an important initiative that directly speaks to our shared responsibility in creating a safer, more supportive environment for everyone at Cornell: the establishment of a new task force to focus on addressing and preventing sexual assault on campus — a serious and persistent problem, both nationally and here on our campus.
The task force, led by Rachel Dunifon, the Rebecca Q. and James C. Morgan Dean of the College of Human Ecology, and Marla Love, the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students, is charged with gathering data, reviewing existing research, examining strategies employed at peer institutions, and consulting with the campus community and subject matter experts to make informed, actionable recommendations for reducing and preventing sexual assault at Cornell. They will take a holistic approach, looking at the issue from multiple angles — including academic, social, and residential life — and recommendations will be focused on prevention and the broader social context in which these incidents occur.
This summer, the task force will deliver a report that outlines evidence-based strategies for addressing sexual assault at Cornell, including a timeline for implementation, metrics for success, and a plan to institutionalize this work.
This task force represents our ongoing commitment to creating a campus culture where everyone can thrive in an environment of respect and safety. Sexual assault has no place at Cornell, and we will continue to take a comprehensive, public health-oriented approach to address it. Our Sexual Harassment and Assault – Response and Education (SHARE) website offers resources for support, education, reporting, and advocacy for those impacted by sexual assault. However, we recognize that while we have made significant progress, more must be done.
This is a community-wide effort, and your engagement is vital. We encourage everyone to participate in the upcoming opportunities to provide input and share ideas for improving the way we address sexual assault at Cornell. You can share questions and feedback with the task force at tfsa@cornell.edu. Together, we can ensure that all members of our community feel safe, supported, and empowered.
Sincerely,
