Launching Student Code of Conduct and Procedures review

Dear Cornell community,

Cornell University is committed to maintaining student conduct policies that reflect our values and support a healthy and safe campus community. As outlined in the Student Code of Conduct PDF (Code), regular review of both the Code and its accompanying Student Code of Conduct Procedures PDF (Procedures) is an important part of ensuring that these documents remain relevant and effective.

In keeping with the intent for ongoing, systematic evaluation, the university is launching a formal review process during the 2025–26 academic year. The revised Code and Procedures are expected to take effect by the start of the fall 2026 semester.

Since the current Code went into effect in 2021, much has changed across higher education and within our own Cornell campus community. As student life and academic expectations have evolved, our approach to student learning and accountability must also evolve. We have listened to feedback from students, faculty, and staff, and we are committed to ensuring that the Code continues to reflect the needs and priorities of our campus community and the realities of today’s student experience. Part of this evolution includes the recent establishment of the Cornell Office of Civil Rights (COCR), formerly known as the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX. As the COCR takes shape, it is essential that the Code also reflects the updated infrastructure and the policies the office upholds.

In accordance with the Code PDF, the vice president for student and campus life, in partnership with Cornell’s shared student governance bodies, oversees the Code revision. Marla Love, the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students, will chair the Codes and Procedures Revision Committee. With extensive experience in student conduct, restorative justice, and student advocacy, Dean Love brings both deep expertise and a steadfast commitment to student well-being and community standards. Under her leadership, the committee will engage in a thoughtful, inclusive revision process.

The committee—as per the code—includes representation from the Student Assembly, the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, as well as faculty and staff. This committee will review current policies, solicit input from stakeholders, and propose amendments that reflect best practices, legal compliance, and the guiding principles of the Cornell community. A draft of the revised Code and Procedures will be released for public comment at the start of the spring 2026 semester, ensuring transparency and broad community engagement before adoption. To provide regular updates on the process, we have created a Code of Conduct and Procedures Review webpage.

Thank you for your partnership and ongoing commitment to making Cornell a place where all students can thrive.

Best,

Ryan Lombardi
Vice President, Student and Campus Life
