Federal government shutdown

Dear Cornell community,

Cornell leadership has been closely monitoring discussions in Washington, D.C., and there is a strong possibility that the U.S. federal government will shut down at midnight, pausing government functions related to university education, research, and operations.

As with past government shutdowns, Cornell has contingency plans in place. Across all campuses, we are well prepared to handle potential disruptions, and we do not expect a shutdown to have an immediate, significant impact on our operations.

Where relevant, the university will send additional communications about response plans and resources. For example, if you are part of the broad Cornell research community that is sponsored by, or works with, federal government agencies, the university will provide additional guidance to support researchers.

Students who receive federal financial aid or Veterans Affairs benefits should not face any immediate impact. Depending on the duration of the shutdown, employees or students seeking visa renewals may experience delays, and we are seeking further clarity on potential impacts.

Cornell leaders are monitoring developments closely and working to minimize disruptions to academic work, research, studies, and travel plans. If the shutdown proceeds, the university will share updates to the community when appropriate.

We know that government shutdowns can be stressful. Cornell has many well-being resources available for faculty and staff and for students.

Sincerely,

Gary Koretzky
